Blogpost 4: "Homunculus"

Let's talk about Homunculus in this post, ok? Media has been releasing shows or online games that has homunculus in it. Ragnarok online has those homunuculus, Full Metal Alchemist has homunculus. We can also say that The Powerpuff Girls are also an example of  homunculus because they are created using chemicals. But what is a homunculi? Is it real? Will "it" live in the future by using genetic engineering? Or is it really an "IT"?

Homunculus a very small human or humanoid creature or an artificial humans. It is said that homunculus are created when a sperm is developed into a human without the participation of woman's egg. So, this suggest a development in a different way. It may look different from human and rather a monster as it lacks in substance.

Alchemist Guild

In Ragnarok Online, which is my favourite online game, homunculus is a some kind of an extension skills of the alchemists. They are pets that aids you in battle. You can only unlock the skill tree of this by doing the Bioethics skill quest.

Full Metal Alchemist Homunculus

In Full Metal Alchemist, the homunculus is inspired by the seven  sin of humans which is wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.

Homunculus In Science?

Homunculus is the sensory map of your body.

Craig Freudenrich, Ph.D. and Robynne Boyd suggest in science.howstuffworks.com that, "The brain is hard-wired with connections, much like a skyscraper or airplane is hard-wired with electrical wiring. In the case of the brain, the connections are made by neurons that link the sensory inputs and motor outputs with centers in the various lobes of the cerebral cortex."

Click here to read the entire article about the cortical homunculus.

It's such a great representation of how many neurons are present in some parts of our body.

I believe that the research on homunculus is insufficient. Until today, there are very few research that is existing about these creatures. I still hope that alchemy is true and maybe someday be proven with science.

Blogpost 3: "Science in Media"

Some media really do make us think about reality. Some media are really educational. It can also be a handy-dandy knowledge for some unexpected incident or accident. Animal Planet, National Geographic Channel, and Discovery Channel are some examples of these. *cough* Mythbusters *cough*. Did I mention about Discovery Channel?? Might as well discuss Mythbusters.

Mythbusters will bust your a-.. wait, brains out.

Not all cats are killed by curiosity. No, not even nerds. These nerds will bust your brain cells out!
Nerds will rule the world someday.

In James Daniels' article on toplessrobot.com, he said, "Mythbusters! Nerd porn of the highest order! Mr. Wizard for grown-ups -- with explosions! For over seven years we've watched Adam and Jamie's Odd Couple act, watched Grant build the awesomest of machines, watched Tory hurt himself, and watched Kari... well, just watched Kari, really."

Mythbusters is really one of the most exciting and most interesting shows ever!

I really love it when they prove something. I'm like, "Science, B****!"

The Corwin Experience

Jeff Corwin is one of the people who i really admire when it comes to animals and places. I mean, he has a great sense of humour. It's not just pure knowledge. it also has an entertainment. It's fun to watch him. Can he just be my uncle!? I really suggest letting your kids watch his shows. Great knowledge on some tiny things might come in handy.

Andrea Graham wrote on commonsensemedia.org what parents need to know about the show, Corwin's Quest. She said, "Corwin's travels to other countries may also encourage discussion about planet's various ecological environments and how they're interconnected and dependent on each others' survival. What animals live in your family's environment?"

I really agree with Andrea's rate on this show. 4/5 stars.

Encarta Your Knowledge

Another fine example of educational media is Encarta. Hear that, Microsoft? ENCARTA!
I've used Encarta when I was a kid. Specially if there's no internet. And believe me, it is really fun and creative. I really love the color green, though.

Encarta has greatly affects my knowledge and strategy when i was a kid. I've always imagined having insects as my pets. I've also wanted to become a scientist someday because of the science facts it suggests. And curiosity will never kill a cat . As long as it still got nine lives.

It increased my level of curiosity to science. So, I ventured further. It increased my knowledge in understanding physics and biology. Now, I love reading science research over the internet. Most often in facebook pages that are related to recent studies.

PCWorld Staff stated on their website, pcworld.com, that, "Overall, Microsoft's Encarta line is the best of the breed, and has been for a few years running now."

I strongly believe that it greatly influenced my brain and made it more active when i was a child.

I'll continue my research about media on my next blogpost. Stick around. If you have any comments, write it bellow.

Blogpost 2: "Brain Damaged Standardisation!"

Media have been a huge part of everybody's life. I swear to God that it affects our daily lifestyle and our attitude towards everything that might come our way. Even a simple cartoon show may affect our attitude towards work. Children and adults are influenced by media in some ways. Some also may refuse to grow up.

Animated Violence for Kids!

Joanne Cantor, Ph.D. says in her article"We can't randomly assign children early in their lives to watch different doses of violence on television and then 15 years later see which children committed violent crimes.". For more information about his research, go to this link http://www.yourmindonmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/media_violence_paper.pdf.

It indeed affect the children and the way they grow up. Children often want to grow up and become like their idols. Some turn out to be bad and maybe become a bully or a loser or maybe even criminal. Some would stood up and speak their minds. I can say this because I also have been a child. I would often pattern my life to a movie or in a television show. Who doesn't anyways?

Look at My Body Electric, Baby!

Media can also affect our body image, health, emotions, and lifestyle. It greatly affects women. They have this conception of being beautiful and aggressiveness in fashion is what women do. The would often feel insecure and become indulge into something that harms their body like bulimia and anorexia and self-harming. But not all women are affected by this and not all men are immune to this.

In this article, Kasey L. Serdar said that, "Body image isa a complicated aspect of the self-concept that concerns an individual's perceptions and feeling about their body and physical appearance (Cash & Pruzinsky, 2002)."

Anorexic Modelling License, Everyone?

Modelling scouts recruits patients with an eating disorder to lure them into modelling. Katy Waldman said in her article, “People have stood outside our clinic and tried to pick up our girls because they know they are very thin." She then added, “It sends the wrong signals,”
check out her article at

Well, it is indeed a requirement to have standards when it comes to the way people look. You cannot just go to work with undies. But media sometimes has those very high expectations that a human almost cannot achieve naturally. Media often lead to something so beautiful, or a road kill. It often becomes a psychological defect to girls.

What do you guys think? Is media imposing a standard? Is it causing a psychological defect or just a misconception of people? Post your comment below!

Blogpost 1: "Media is a Bully!"

You guys ever heard of news stating that a famous public figure was attacked by media? Or maybe even a famous public figure being attacked a media. There exist some actually.

Sometimes, media can be so stressful. They may even accidentally push you over in hoping to get an interview or something. Most of the time, they would ask you about your latest controversies and bad things while having a hard time to even recover for that incident. Or maybe not being able to speak because of the trauma that occurred and yet they still chose to ask. Sometimes they are really really kind. The paparazzi would help us out like carry our heavy grocery bags. So in return we treat them to a nice restaurant or give them something that is so limited or exclusive.

For the past years, I've observe that the audience or the people who watches news reports would often prefer to hear what the bad news is. Even in newspapers. They would just glance and skip the good parts like job opportunities, people discovering a new way to prevent cancer, and teenagers inventing a very advanced technology. Instead, they would just read or listen to people being raped and abused and this local celebrity have had plastic surgery.

One of the articles in celebrityplasticpics.com, you can see Michael Jackson's transformation. But the title really bugs me. It says "Michael Jackson - from black man to white woman". Is that really necessary? In that post, they've just become a bully. Follow this link if you want to read the article about Michael's transformation. http://www.celebrityplasticpics.com/rhinoplasty/michael-jackson/

And another article about the media bullying Michael. http://anomalies-unlimited.com/Jackson.html

Another one is Lady Gaga's weight gain. Robyn Chealsea-Seifert article in examiner.com says "Forget about Lady Gaga's achievement. Her five Grammy Awards. Her music - "Born This Way," "The Fame Monster," and "The Fame" selling 15 million album worldwide and her singles having a combined sale of over 90 million giving the artist a $52 million paycheck over the past year."

She then continue it with "Not bad, but in the scheme of things who really cares. Apparently, she's fat. Huge.". Seriously, are you complimenting her or just bullying her? And who cares about being huge anyways? Try dancing, singing, and wearing 5 inches heels all at the same time. Not to mention eating pasta and pizza because her family is Italian-American. I'd marry Oprah Winfrey if I can! What differences does a big mama have anyways?

You can read the article here http://www.examiner.com/article/lady-gaga-is-fat.

Another one that is bullied by the media is Nancy Binay (the wife of Vice President of the Philippines, Jejomar Binay). In http://www.keywordspeak.com/2013/05/nancy-binay-jokes.html, Lyle Santos said "BREAKING NEWS: Filipinos elect first black senator. #NancyBinay". Nancy didn't even do anything bad to our government yet. Yes, her color somewhat resembles the black people but really?! She's Filipino. Her colour is suppose to be brown. I know for sure that most of the people really just hate her because of her colour. They might not even be aware that she doesn't have a background in government. But i'll give her a chance to prove her ability. Who knows, maybe she might turned out to be one of the greatest senators that the Philippines ever had.

One thing for sure, MEDIA HAS TURNED INTO A BULLY. Media turned into a monster. We've turned into a monster. I'm pretty sure that the issue of the "Amalayer girl" (I'm a liar girl) haven't become viral if it weren't even filmed.

I do believe that the government should create a new law for the medias. Examples of these are:

  • Never go beyond in an individual's own privacy;
  • Do not film if the person demanded to not be filmed; and
  • Write the whole story of the incident in the description box if your going to post it online.
People from today just want to do what they do. So, in order to avoid mistakes, you guys better ask yourself what are the effects of your going to post online next time. You guys might see yourself next time in a cell with the other criminals. Just be nice to everyone else and you might get a reward or something.

Blogpost: "Media Introduction"

Introduction

Media comes from medium, a way through which one can communicate with the other.

So, letters, posters, emails, and public meetings are forms of media. There is also mass media, where you communicate with a large number of people. It includes TV, News, Internet.

Evolution

The beginning of human communication through designed channels dates back to ancient cave paintings, drawn maps, and writing.

The Persian Empire (centred around present-day Iran and Afghanistan) played an important role in the field of communication. It devised what might be described as the first real mail or postal system, which is said to have been developed by the Persian emperor Cyrus the Great (c. 550 BC) after his conquest of Media. The role of the system as an intelligence gathering apparatus is well documented, and the service was (later) called angariae, a term that in time turned to indicate a tax system. The Old Testament (Esther, VIII) makes mention of this system: Ahasuerus, king of Medes, used couriers for communicating his decisions.

The word communication is derived from the Latin root communicare. This was due to the Roman Empire also devising what might be described as a mail or postal system, in order to centralize control of the empire from Rome. This allowed for personal letters and for Rome to gather knowledge about events in its many widespread provinces. More advanced postal systems later appeared in the Islamic Caliphate and the Mongol Empireduring the Middle Ages.

The term "media" in its modern application relating to communication channels is traced back to its first use as such by Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan, who stated in Counterblast (1954): "The media are not toys; they should not be in the hands of Mother Goose and Peter Pan executives. They can be entrusted only to new artists, because they are art forms." By the mid-1960s, the term had spread to general use in North America and the United Kingdom.

The adoption of a dominant communication medium is important enough that historians have folded civilization into "ages" according to the medium most widely used. A book titled "Five Epochs of Civilization" by William McGaughey (Thistlerose, 2000) divides history into the following stages:Ideographic writing produced the first civilization; alphabetic writing, the second; printing, the third; electronic recording and broadcasting, the fourth; and computer communication, the fifth. The media affect what people think about themselves and how they perceive people as well. What we think about self image and what others should look like comes from the media.

While it could be argued that these "Epochs" are just a historian's construction, digital and computer communication shows concrete evidence of changing the way humans organize. The latest trend in communication, termed smartmobbing, involves ad-hoc organization through mobile devices, allowing for effective many-to-many communication and social networking.

Electronic media

In the last century, a revolution in telecommunications has greatly altered communication by providing new media for long distance communication. The first transatlantic two-way radio broadcast occurred in 1906 and led to common communication via analogue and digital media:

  • Analog telecommunications include some radio systems, historical telephony systems, and historical TV broadcasts.
  • Digital telecommunications allow for computer-mediated communication, telegraphy, and computer networks.
Modern communication media now allow for intense long-distance exchanges between larger numbers of people. On the other hand, many traditional broadcast media and mass media favour one-to-many communication.

Electronic media is enjoying broader use every day with an increase in electronic devices being made. The meaning of electronic media, as it is known in various spheres, has changed with the passage of time. The term media has achieved a broader meaning nowadays as compared to that given it a decade ago. Earlier, there was multimedia, once only a piece of software (application software) used to play audio (sound) and video (visual object with or without sound). Following this, it was CD (Compact Disc) and DVD (Digital Versatile Disc), then camera of 3G (Third Generation) applications in the field. In modern terms, the media includes all the software which are used in PC (Computer) or Laptop or Mobile Phone installed for normal or better performance of the system; today, however, hard discs (used to increase the installation capacity of data) of computer is an example of electronic media. This type of hard disc is becoming increasingly smaller in size. The latest inclusion in the field is magnetic media (magnetic stripe) whose application is common, in the fastest growing Information Technology field. Modern day IT media is commonly used in the banking sector and by the Income Tax Department for the purpose of providing the easiest and fastest possible services to the consumers. In this magnetic strip all the data relating to a particular consumer is stored. Credit card, Debit card , ATM card, High end travel card are comprised within the term Media as it is known today. The main feature of these types of media is these are prepared unrecorded (blank form) and data is normally stored at a later stage as per the requirement of its user or consumer.

Social Impact

Media technology has made communicating increasingly easier as time has passed throughout history. Today, children are encouraged to use media tools in school and are expected to have a general understanding of the various technologies available. The internet is arguably one of the most effective tools in media for communication. Tools such as e-mail, Skype, Facebook etc., have brought people closer together and created new online communities. However, some may argue that certain types of media can hinder face-to-face communication and therefore can result in complications like identity fraud.

In a large consumer-driven society, electronic media and print media are important for distributing advertisement media. More technologically advanced societies have access to goods and services through newer media than less technologically advanced societies.

Media, through media and communications psychology, has helped to connect diverse people from far and near geographical location. It has also helped in the aspect of on- line/ internet business and other activities that has an on-line version. All media intended to affect human behavior is initiatied through communication and the intended behavior is couched in psychology. Therefore, understanding media and communications psychology is fundamental in understanding the social and individual effects of media. The expanding field of media and communications psychology combines these established disciplines in a new way.

Timing change based on innovation and efficiency may not have a direct correlation with technology. The information revolution is based on modern advancements. During the 19th century, the information "boom" rapidly advanced because of postal systems, increase in newspaper accessibility, as well as schools "modernizing". These advancements were made due to the increase of people becoming literate and educated. The methodology of communication although has changed and dispersed in numerous directions based on the source of its sociocultural impact.
